Providing Quality Health Care for All
Quality health care is a basic human right – it is not a privilege for the wealthy few! This is my guiding principal. We live in the wealthiest nation in the world, yet we suffer under the world’s most antiquated healthcare system. Our insurance-based health-care system routinely denies quality care to millions, and for one reason; the strength of special interest lobbies in Washington. The time for quality medical care for every American is NOW.
When I was just a teenager my Mother was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Very shortly thereafter, my family was buried under a mountain of bills. And we had insurance! My mom passed away 3 years later, but it took my Dad another 5 to 6 years to dig his way out from under those bills. This shouldn’t happen in America. No family should go bankrupt, or come as close as mine did, just because someone in the family gets sick.
That is why I support expanding Medicare to cover every woman, man, and child in America. Providing quality health care for every American should be our nation’s top priority.
Donald Trump is trying to cut the legs out from under the Affordable Care Act; first by removing the individual mandate and then by slashing enrollment funding for the ACA. And he’s just gotten started. His plan will cause insurance premiums to skyrocket; cause programs to discriminate against older Americans by imposing what AARP calls the “age tax;” and result in an estimated 22 million people being unable to afford health insurance.
In Congress, I will work to establish bipartisan support for Medicare for All, as well as to protect and defend all aspects of Medicare and Medicaid (known as Medi-Cal in California).
We need to stand together and work to stop the Trump healthcare disaster. We should be expanding access to healthcare for hard-working families, not making it more expensive and taking it away from millions.
San Diego County is one of our nation’s leaders in life-saving, bio-medical research and many of these biotechnology firms are located in the 49th Congressional district. Not only do these firms provide good-paying jobs, but they also provide critical scientific research. Much of the funding for this research comes through the National Institute of Health (NIH), and once elected, I will do everything in my power to ensure that the funding needed to support this vital research is both protected and expanded.
