I am 100% pro-choice.  I’ve always believed that a woman should be able to make her own private health and reproductive decision, in consultation with her doctor.  Our government has absolutely no business getting involved with these decisions.  As your next Congressional representative, I will stand up to any and all threats to a woman’s Right to Choose.

One such threat can be found in the way various states are end-running Roe v Wade and enacting a variety of prohibitive restrictions on abortions.  The Women’s Health Protection Act is a federal bill that would prohibit states from imposing restrictions on abortion, interfere with a woman’s personal decision making, and block access to a safe, legal abortion.  I will support the Women’s Health Protection Act.

A second, and continual threat to a Women’s Right to Choose has been the Hyde Amendment.  This amendment, which has been renewed annually for over 40 years, blocks federal funds from being used to pay for an abortion outside of the exceptions for rape, incest, or if the pregnancy is determined to endanger the woman’s life. Currently, Republicans and the Trump administration are threatening to make this provision, permanent law. This amendment needs to be repealed, permanently.

Planned Parenthood has been providing quality, affordable healthcare, for almost 100 years, and for over 55 years here in Southern California. They provide birth control measures, cancer screenings, safe and legal abortions, STI screenings, and other high-quality healthcare services to millions of Americans.  In addition, over 60% of their patients reportedly qualify for public health coverage programs, like Title X, the nation’s largest family planning program, and Medicaid.  Defunding Planned Parenthood would prevent millions of Americans from getting access to basic, preventative healthcare, such as cancer screenings, birth control, pap smears, mammograms and well-woman exams. Finally, more than half of the Planned Parenthood health centers are located in rural or medically underserved areas of the country.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of Republicans in Congress want to dictate a woman’s healthcare decisions. They have voted to defund Planned Parenthood, despite the fact that it provides incredibly vital, life-saving medical care to millions of under-served Americans.  Donald Trump and the Republicans also support letting employers deny women access to birth control.

Women in America deserve better, and for as long as I’m privileged to serve you in Congress, I will always stand up to any and all Republican efforts to demonize and defund Planned Parenthood.
